The first 2 weeks I spent at a local school assisting the teacher with English classes for grades 1-6. This was an exciting and terrifying experience, the children were VERY rowdy and excitable possibly due to the fact it was nearly Christmas holidays! I have a new found respect for all primary school teachers the world over; it’s not a job for the fainthearted!
During my time volunteering I also worked at an orphanage helping with the kids, which mainly involved playing football and games with them, which was fun and rewarding.
I also did a stint at construction (this wasn’t something I had considered doing before) but hey, sifting dirt never killed anyone!
By far the highlight of my volunteering experience was teaching the evening adult English classes. This is something I had previous experience of but volunteering here in Costa Rica was tremendously rewarding as the students were so keen to learn (obviously they weren’t as excited about the Christmas holidays as the kids)!
I would recommend volunteering to anyone; it’s a fantastic way of travelling and seeing the country. I have visited so many wonderful places and experienced so many exciting and amazing things; Costa Rica is definitely a country I would recommend to everyone Pura Vida!
