Volunteering in Community Education in Costa Rica

Volunteer in our Community Education project and help improve the quality of education for disadvantaged children in rural Costa Rica. Students in areas like Alajuela province struggle to attain the same standard of teaching as their peers in wealthier urban areas. With your help, young students can receive the education they need to build skills for a brighter future.

Working at a dedicated center in San Ramon, volunteers support children who attend the daycare facility in the morning and the after-school club and community center in the afternoon. You will help young students develop their reading skills, assist them with homework, and interact with children through fun activities. Volunteers also deliver workshops that showcase any special skills they have.

Many of the children who attend the center come from low-income backgrounds and have illiterate parents, so the project has a strong focus on improving literacy. Center staff are bilingual but most of the children speak little or no English – an intermediate level of Spanish is helpful.

Project Reviews & Testimonials

The arrival into San Ramon was quick and easy! The staffs made us feel welcome; the kids were desperate for attention and wanted us to play with them 24/7.

Another great thing about being part of uVolunteer is being able to help out the community while also travelling and seeing the country. We travelled to Jaco, Monteverde y Montezuma. Monteverde was by far the best. We went zip lining, horseback riding, and took a night tour where we saw a huge tarantula and lots of birds.

I told Suri that I was really nervous about volunteering because I didn't speak any Spanish.

He assured me not to worry because I'm here doing a good thing and that heart is universal. I took his words to heart and from that moment on, I started to relax. The next couple days at my project were spent digging trenches with Juan Miguel, a grandpa who was way more fit than I was.

My arrival was a bit complicated but uVolunteer dealt with it efficiently I spent two weeks with uVolunteer doing construction (building a house for a low-income family).

My arrival was a bit complicating but uVolunteer dealt with it efficiently and I was brought to the dorm and was fed a delicious meal. All the other volunteers were very nice and welcoming. I spent two weeks with uVolunteer doing construction (building a house for a low-income family).

On Monday, I started my 2 week volunteer project at Community centre.

I can hardly describe how incredible the staff is. They included me into their group and mde me feel right at home. The kids at Bajo are equally amazing. They are such special and warm children. Even ofter just 2 weeks, I grew much attached to some of the children, and it was very hard to leave them.

I loved working with the children at the community center.

I thought walking to and from the center each day was also great exercise. The children at the center were loving, happy, polite, and I hope we were able to make at least a tiny difference in their lives.

There was some small trouble with the showers, but that was fixed promptly.

I like the on-demand water heaters so that we never run out of hot water. There may have been some small confusion about how many people were staying here, because one of the beds did not have a blanket or pillow, but that was remedied quickly.

A

s I begin to type my first words to describe my three weeks journey with uVolunteer, I am sitting in the plane on my way home, yet realizing all of my wonderful experiences and the unforgettable people I have met in Costa Rica

I was lucky enough to go zip lining the second day I arrived and it was an experience I know I will never forget!.

I was very excited to start working and going to the Community Education Project in Bajo Tijares the first day was a bit of a culture shock for me and it really impacted me because I was never familiar with people living like that.

Getting acquainted with the group and at the dorm was a breeze, we engaged into the cultural, social and volunteer aspects of the trip very fast and with a great flow.

We received the orientation, toured the beautiful town of San Ramon and on that very day, we decided to JUMP OFF A BRIDGE!!!! Yes!!, we went bungee jumping in Naranjo, very close to San Ramon. Next day Pacuare river rafting (absolutely beautiful). And that was our magical weekend!!!

Everyone is a contributing factor, San Ramon is a great place to experience the Costa Rican Culture but ultimately my favorite part has been my service to the community.

Coming to Costa Rica I had expectations as well as thoughts as to what the experience would consist of. I was curious as well as concerned about the uVolunteer house, the community, food, as well as the service.
